Located at the south shore mouth of the Columbia River which then flows into the Pacific Ocean, and named after American investor and businessman John Jacob Astor who founded Fort Astoria at the city's location through the American Fur Company in 1811, Astoria, Oregon is the main seat of government of Clatsop County in Oregon. The city is noted to be one of the first permanent US Northwest settlements and housing the first US post office outside of the Rocky Mountains region. The Lewis and Clark Expedition stayed in the area during the 1805-1806 winter season.
Today, the city is highly well-known for being a fishing port and center for the arts with tourism, arts patronage, microbrewery/brewpub, and light manufacturing as its main economic activities. Its noted points of interest include Fort Clastop, the Astoria Column, and the Oregon Film Museum (formerly the Clastop County Jail).
A lower class area of the town referred to as the Goon Docks were to be demolished by a man named Perkins in order to expand his country club's golf course, prompting the Goonies to find One-Eyed Willy's treasure. Mr. Perkins might still could have made his deal with Mikey's father, if it had not been for the Walsh family's Spanish housemaid, Rosalita, who found some jewels in Mikey's marble bag. This saved the Goon Docks from destruction.
