Credence Barebone was an American man who lived during the 20th century. He was the adopted son of Mary Lou Barebone, the leader of the New Salem Philanthropic Society, a No-Maj anti-witchcraft group. He was of apparent Magical decent and all the years of mental and physical abuse by his mother caused him to suppress his powers until it became a parasitic entity known as an Obscurus. his eventually caught the attention of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald disguised as Percival Graves, he formed an apparent friendship with the boy and began telling him of his heritage and that if Credence helped him track down the Obscurus he would teach Credence in the magical arts. Credence's powers were made clear to the wizarding community when Senator Shaw was killed by the Obscurus as well as Mary Lou. Graves and Credence found Modesty Barebone, whom Graves believed to be the Obscurus and then insulted Credence believing he was a Squib, this was the final straw that unleashed the full might of Credence's powers and went on a rampage across the city destroying much of New York. Newt and Tina tried reasoning with him but Graves persisted in manipulating the confused boy into causing more destruction. He was eventually cornered in the Subway tunnels and before deciding whether to go with Newt or join Graves. The MACUSA Aurors arrived and attacked Credence, seemingly destroying him. Newt, however, noticed a tiny piece of the Obscurus indicating Credence may have survived.
