- “I'm sorry Dave, I do not know how to do that, as I do not know how I got here.”
- — H.A.L. 9000 to GLaDOS
H.A.L. 9000 (or just Hal) is one of the non-playable cameo characters in LEGO Dimensions, from the 2001: A Space Odyssey franchise.
Background
H.A.L. 9000 is a fictional character in Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series. The primary antagonist of 2001: A Space Odyssey, H.A.L. (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) is a sentient computer (or artificial general intelligence) that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew. H.A.L.'s exterior physical form is not depicted, though it is visually represented as a red television camera eye located on equipment panels throughout the ship, and its interior in the scene where his advanced memory modules are disconnected. H.A.L. 9000 is voiced by Douglas Rain in the two film adaptations of the Space Odyssey series & a short film voiced by Andrew Stanton. H.A.L. speaks in a soft, calm voice and a conversational manner, in contrast to the crewmen, David Bowman and Frank Poole, who speak tersely and with little emotional inflection.
Dimension Crisis
In GLaD to See You, he was summoned by the Locate Keystone to distract GLaDOS so Batman, Wyldstyle, and Gandalf can defeat her.
Trivia
- He is the only cameo character in LEGO Dimensions who appeared in the game. The other cameo franchises like The Flintstones and The Jetsons only had easter egg locations and no character cameos- all three were possible thanks to ownership of their respective properties by Warner Bros. (the films HAL appeared in were originally created by MGM, and were acquired with the pre-1986 MGM library by Ted Turner that year, and came into WB's holdings when Time Warner and Turner merged in 1996).
- It is unknown if he is played by Douglas Rain or Andrew Stanton.
